In this photo I am filing the hammers to restore the original shape to return the instrument to it original sound. Over years of playing the hammers become grooved by hitting the strings and this causes a distortion in the sound. After reshaping the hammers the can be softened to produce a more melo sound. This is call voicing or tone regulation.

* Tone regulation is adjusting the density of the hammers so that the quality of the sound is changed.  Can be made brighter or softer.
